Bimini from the water

If you look at a large map, you can see that the island is shaped like a big C.  we're at the skinny end just across from South Bimini.  The eastern side of the island is mostly marshy flats and mangroves.  There is very thin water to the  east of the island so when we leave, we'll either go north or south on the Atlantic side and go over the Bahama Banks through one of the few ways boats with our draft (how deep we sit in the water) can go.  We need at least 6 feet of water to be comfortable.  We went by dingy to the other end of Bimini last night just to see what things look like from that angle.  For the most part, what we've seen is not a lot of prosperity by US standards but people are friendly and helpful.  What we saw on the north end was a world apart but that is another post.
One of our neighboring marinas.

The government building.  Immigration, post office and a few other national
departments are in the small pink building.  I'll show you the large building
under construction in another post.

The government dock.

One of the little isles along the bay.  The shallow flats are very visible at low tide.

The flock of ibis was taking advantage of the low water revealing
whatever they were interested in  eating.

These large dolphins are for boat too big to come in to a shoreside dock.

This fuel boat was on one such set of dolphins delivering fuel for the power plant.

This wasn't from the water, obviously, but it did strike us as funny.
Were the cans surplus from Miami?  I can't imagine making the effort
to sneak into Miami and take them as souvenirs!

The ocean side of Bimini.  So whipped up. We're glad to be on
the lee side of the island.
