Great Harbour Cay

Even though we're trying to go North to the Abacos, we're jumping on any  weather window that gets us farther East.  The Tradewinds are primarily out of the East and strong so it's hard to travel very long in that direction.  After Bimini, we took a marginal window and made it to Great Harbour Cay (hard C as in key).  It wasn't a long trip, about 18 hours but it had every type of weather.  We had a great current pushing us up to the North end of Bimini.  We rounded the end and entered the Bahama Flats.  Miles of water less than 30 feet deep.  About two hours into the trip, we saw the storm coming up from behind.  Boy was it a storm but gratefully it was a fast moving one.  For about 45 minutes we had gale force winds and driving rain.  Once it blew itself out, we had almost no wind so we motored.  Then some wind came up but from a different direction.  Before it was all said and done, We had wind from almost all directions with varying velocities.  Not a terrible trip but definitely not like any we've experienced before.
Anyway, we have not been to GHC in years and looked forward to checking it out, hoping it had not experienced the devastation we saw on Bimini.  The next several posts will be from all over the island.  We put our bikes to good use here.  The island is about 7 miles long and 1.5 miles wide.

The storm pictures just don't do justice to the awesome power
and I was unable to capture any lightning.  I was a tad busy,
in my defense.

You know it's coming so you pray and prepare.

North Rock light at the end of Bimini.

We ride the bikes everywhere since the marina is a fair distance
from town or the beaches.  This is a main road and in much
better shape than most.  The potholes and breaks are jarring.

The public dock.  It is still in the process of being rebuilt.  I'm
not really sure how the large supply ships get in to deliver food and
all the other necessities of life.

There is a cut in the rock to allow entrance to the area where
our marina is located.  It was blasted and widened years ago.

If you didn't have a good chart, you might not know this is the
cut from out in the water.

Great Harbor Cay marina.

And another view.  The pavillion is a gather place for boaters and
occasionally vendors.

Work being done on the government dock.

The cut as we entered the lagoon.

The island clinic and some government offices.

You go up a hill then turn down to the town of Bullock's Harbour.
This sign looked brand new.

Across one of the many small bodies of water on the island.
