At it's heyday, the island was host to many of the big stars of the 60s. There was a huge hotel, country club with a golf course. The likes of Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Dean Martin etc. were frequent visitors. Once the cool factor wore off the place fell into bankruptcy and disrepair. Still they sit on stunning views.
This looks like a long strip of sand, but it's actually a
5,000 foot runway. If you zoom in, you can see the terminal at the
end. There is now scheduled airline service from Ft. Lauderdale
several times a week.
We met the gentleman who built this little marina on our
last trip here.
The end of the runway.
The old clubhouse.
One of the golf course fairways. Some one must mow
or they would look like the rest of the area. We've been told there
are not any holes but people go out and practice on the course.
This was a favorite on our last visit and still is now. It sits
right on the ocean side of the island.
The open air dining area.
