Sarasota

From Venice, we moseyed the few miles up to the Sarasota YC.  We hadn't been there in several years but to make sure we made it to Mass on Easter, we rented a car.  When we tried to go in Captiva, all cabs and ride shares were busy taking people to the airport at then end of their stay.  We made good use of the rental by restocking all the heavy items from the grocery store, a parts run for the boat and other miscellaneous shopping.  We also did some sight seeing and of course Easter Mass.  All told, we were in the area 4 days and did quite a bit.  One of the best things, was the Ringling Museum.  We both love circuses and Sarasota was the original winter home of the Ringling Brothers Circus.  More on that later.

This is a wagon wheel from a circus cart.  It was
inside the church where we went for Easter, St. Martha's.
It was the church for the circus and any Sacraments received along
the circus route were recorded in the church records.

The courtyard between the main church and the
school and parish hall.  What a beautiful place to
spend quiet time with God.

The church isn't huge but it is beautiful.  I counted
over 86 pipes on this organ.  It was very crowded and we sat
between 2 snowbird couples who filled us in on the
history of the church and local area.

Another view of the courtyard.  We had to wait for a while
for the crowd from the previous Mass to leave.
A view of some condos from the mooring
field we moved to after the yacht club.

  1. This looks like a cool place also! Wow, so many great stories - like this being the city and church for the circus. I think I Visited Sarasota years ago - We lived in Florida once - but didn't know that history.
