The Herreshoff Brothers, John, blind since 15, and Nathanael, were two of the most prolific and ingenious boat builders, ever! John was the business brains and Nathanael was the creative genius. In their time, the late 1800s to early 1900s they produced some of the most iconic vessels of the age. They produced power boats, commercial boats, navy boats, pleasure boats and racing boats. Nathanael invented so many new technologies and then created the tools to make them. The brothers were completely different in temperament but for the most part gave each other space to weave their creative genius in their own areas. The company went out of business in 1945, several years after Nathanael sold it upon the death of John. The museum was set up by their descendants and is home to quite the collection of their body of work. We spent several hours there and it was not enough time.

The Herreshoff Manufacturing Company produced the winningest line of America's Cup defenders. The America's Cup museum is also part of the overall museum. This was one of the defenders along with the smaller hull model used to test new hull innovations in large tanks.
